Shrink To Fit (September 02 2010)

I posted this letter at the NY Times website in response to their story on drugging kids with drugs once reserved for only the most mentally disturbed.

This article reflects just how sick American child psychiatry has become. Unfortunately we are yet to find a cure. In the 70’s congress held hearings on the overuse of stimulant drugs in hyperactive kids. Had they seen the future they would have thought the world gone mad. America is in a buffer, most of the rest of the world would not partake in the mass drugging of it’s own children. A child diagnosed as Autism because he’s on an anti-psychotic drug, and then given more drugs. Welcome to hell, child.

I am glad to see they posted it

This, from the article:

More than 500,000 children and adolescents in America are now taking antipsychotic drugs, according to a September 2009 report by the Food and Drug Administration. Their use is growing not only among older teenagers, when schizophrenia is believed to emerge, but also among tens of thousands of preschoolers.

A Columbia University study recently found a doubling of the rate of prescribing antipsychotic drugs for privately insured 2- to 5-year-olds from 2000 to 2007. Only 40 percent of them had received a proper mental health assessment, violating practice standards from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
